Interoperability refers to the ability of two or more systems to exchange information and to use the information that has been exchanged. If two or more systems are capable of communicating and exchanging data, they are exhibiting syntactic interoperability, which is required for any attempt of further interoperability. Semantic interoperability is the ability to automatically interpret the information exchanged meaningfully and accurately in order to produce useful results as defined by the end users of both systems. This work package aims at fostering “interoperability with the future” by unambiguously defining and communicating the content of the information exchanged over long periods of time: What is sent is the same as what is understood later. Apart from supporting standardization activities, APARSEN will investigate in the explicit management of metadata formats, ontologies, and dependencies.
First, APARSEN will provide an overview on interoperability objectives and approaches agreed by experts and stakeholders in the field and propose interoperability services, standard models, formats and virtualization models and interfaces. Secondly, the project will have proposed a methodology for capturing, modelling, managing and exploiting various interoperability dependencies as interoperability strategy.
